Farmington, Minn - Farmington High School Announces Minnesota State High School ExCEL Nominees

The ExCEL Award – Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership – is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, leaders in their schools, and who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service. This award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League's (MSHSL) corporate partner Wells Fargo. 

Coaches, Directors, and Advisors from FHS nominate their leaders in their programs that participate in MSHSL Activities. While the competition was deep and many students were nominated, Juniors Mya Sharp and Evan Trenary, fit the criteria in all categories.

Nomination Criteria 

Every League member school is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award. Nominees must:

  • Be a junior in high school
  • Make satisfactory progress toward graduation
  • Participate in an MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity
  • Hold a leadership position(s) in their school
  • Volunteer in their community
  • Meet MSHSL General Eligibility Requirements (Bylaw 206)

 

Evan has participated in One Act Play, Choir, Theater, and a member of National Honor Society. He has volunteers at Trinity Nursing Home and participated in meal packing at Shepherd of the Valley to name a few of his activities.

According to Evan, “I believe a superior leader is able to allow their peers to grow and learn on their own, with humble guidance. When leading others, it is easy to take control of a situation and instruct without truly teaching. To me, a quality leader can successfully follow through the process of truly educating others by allowing them to practice, fail, and gain confidence on their own. Being humble enough to permit others to grow into leaders themselves is truly the greatest quality one can have.”

Choir director, Megan Dimich, had this to say about Evan's character: “Evan is one the best students I know when it comes to positivity and inclusion of others. He shows his work ethic in rehearsals and activities every day, while simultaneously encouraging those around him to do the same. Seeing all students in the class as equals is a true talent of his and he actively makes sure everyone feels involved and included.”

 

 

Evan Trenary - ExCEL

Mya Sharp has participated in Volleyball, Softball, a member of the Link Crew, is on the honor roll, a peer tutor and counselor, along with volunteering with Farmington Youth Sports, and packaging meals for Feed My Starving Children.

According to Mya, "A good leader is someone who listens, communicates effectively, and leads by example. They provide guidance and support, helping those around them develop individual skills and reach their full potential. Leadership is not just about being in charge, it is about motivating and making a positive impact on others. Leadership is apart of my life in many ways like school, sports, work, and life in general. As an athlete, many people think the best leaders are those that are skilled at their sport, but there is so much more to it. Teammates will respond to someone who leads by example, shows dedication and discipline, and ensures everyone is working towards a common goal. The best leaders are those who are not in it for individual glory, but rather creating a supportive and successful team enviornment. Overall, leadership is an important life skill that can help you grow and make a positive impact on yourself and those around you.

Volleyball Coach, Mike Woody, “she is a person of integrity and grit, demonstrating strong character and responsibility. Mya is also an outstanding teammate. She not only contributes significantly on the court but also fosters a positive and supportive environment within the team.”

Selection Process 

The ExCEL Award recipients will be selected by an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. Award recipients will be announced via the League website on February 6, 2024.

ExCEL Recognition

Each recipient will be recognized on 45TV during the broadcast of the 2024 winter tournaments. They also will participate in an on-court award ceremony during the Class AA championship game of the Girls Basketball State Tournament in March.
