Hailing from Burnsville, MN, May boasts an impressive hockey pedigree, having been a standout player during his high school years, where he earned accolades as a three-year varsity player and a two-time all-conference honoree. His senior year saw him excel as team captain, earning distinctions such as an all-conference selection, a Star Tribune all-metro selection, and leading scorer in the Lake conference. Following his high school career, May continued to make waves in the sport, playing Junior A hockey in the highly competitive North American Hockey League (NAHL) for the Danville Wings. His tenure there culminated in a victory as the team clinched the Robertson Cup as league champions and secured third place in the National Championships.
Transitioning to collegiate hockey, May brought his talent to Augsburg University, where he played for three years, maintaining an impressive point-per-game average and assuming the role of team captain during his junior year. Despite injuries cutting his collegiate career short, May began his coaching career his senior year at Augsburg.
Over the span of 18 years, May honed his coaching skills across various levels of hockey, from guiding mites to high school athletes. His coaching experiences include roles such as assistant JV coach for Mounds View High School in 2008, assistant Bantam A coach for both Burnsville and Apple Valley in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and assistant varsity coach for Burnsville High School from 2011 to 2012. Taking a brief hiatus from coaching between 2012 and 2014, May pursued higher education, earning his master's in business administration from Concordia University - St. Paul. In 2014, May and his family relocated from Eagan to Farmington, where he began coaching in the Farmington Hockey Program.
Serving as the Assistant Boys Hockey Coach at Farmington High School from 2014 to 2016 and again from 2019 to 2021, May played a role in the team's historic run to the State High School Tournament in 2016, marking Farmington High School's debut appearance in Class AA and culminating in a commendable 5th place finish. In addition to his coaching duties, May remained actively involved in the Farmington Youth Hockey Association Board and dedicated time to coaching his two sons in youth hockey.
May is currently the CFO at Larson King, LLP law firm in St. Paul and resides in Farmington with his wife Lauren and three kids, Jackson (12), Taylor (11), and Genevieve (6).
"I am so honored and humbled to be the next Head Boys Coach at Farmington. The past 10 years, Farmington hockey has meant everything to me and my family. My vision for the Farmington Tigers Boys program is to build relationships with players, fellow coaches, and the youth association to help bring back the "Tiger Tone" environment that I was a part of creating in 2014."
"In an extremely competitive candidate pool, Coach May separated himself throughout the interview process," stated Badger. "His vision for our program aligns perfectly with our athletic department's goals for boys hockey. I am excited for Coach May to get to work," said Badger.
May's inaugural season with the Tigers will begin on November 18. The 2024-25 Tigers open with a home game against Bloomington Jefferson on Tuesday, December 3 at Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington.
