Brock Vestrum

  • Title
Assistant Boys Swim & Dive Coach
With three decades of experience in the water, Assistant Coach Brock Vestrum brings a veteran’s perspective to the Farmington Boys Swim & Dive program. A seasoned sprint freestyler and active triathlete, Coach Vestrum has spent 30 years refining the mechanics of the sport, making him an invaluable asset to the team’s technical development.

Coach Vestrum’s coaching strengths lie in Freestyle, a stroke he has mastered through years of competitive swimming and endurance racing. Conversely, he finds Breaststroke to be the most intriguing coaching challenge, noting that its status as the most technical stroke requires a unique level of precise coordination.

During his own competitive days, Vestrum was known for more than just his speed. During swim season, he famously dyed his hair bleach blond—earning him the nickname "Slim Shady." Naturally, his pre-meet ritual always involved blasting Eminem, with "Lose Yourself" serving as the ultimate anthem to get him ready for the blocks.

For Coach Vestrum, success isn't just about what happens in the pool; it’s about how you treat your body afterward. He preaches a recovery philosophy known as the Three R's:
  • Rehydrate: Immediate water intake after hard efforts, supplemented with electrolytes.
  • Refuel: Consuming easily digestible carbohydrates—like rice, pasta, fruit, or chocolate milk, within one hour of finishing.
  • Rebuild: Prioritizing 20–30 grams of protein and anti-inflammatory foods to repair muscle tissue.
While he values scientific nutrition, he also appreciates the community aspect of the sport. His favorite post-practice memory is the Monday morning egg-bake prepared by swim parents, loaded with ham, cheese, and mushrooms.

Personal Favorites:
  • Favorite Stroke to Swim: Backstroke. It serves as his "fun" stroke and a welcome break from the rigors of freestyle.
  • Least Favorite Stroke: Butterfly. He jokingly admits he no longer has the endurance of his younger days for the "Fly."
  • Dream Race: He would love to go head-to-head with Caeleb Dressel. While he admits the comparison ends at the fact that they both have eagle tattoos, the competitive spirit is definitely there.
When he isn't on the pool deck, Coach Vestrum is an avid golfer. Having learned the game from his father at a young age, he enjoys the mental challenge of the links and the opportunity to spend time outdoors in nature.
