Tryouts - To be eligible for tryouts, all student-athletes must have a completed registration, a valid sports physical on file with the athletic office, and the full registration fee paid prior to the first day of tryouts. In the event that an athlete does not make the team, the full registration fee will be refunded. Team selections are based solely on performance during the tryout period—prior experience in club, traveling, or other non-school programs does not factor into the evaluation. We understand that not making a team is disappointing, and we acknowledge those emotions. However, the process is designed to form the most competitive teams possible within our conference, section, and state frameworks. The decision is not a reflection on the coach, athletic director, or school. Some programs have limited space, but our goal is to help every student find a meaningful athletic opportunity, and we are committed to supporting families through that process.
Varsity - The Varsity team represents the highest level of competition within our athletic program. Athletes at this level are expected to demonstrate advanced skills, strong commitment, and the ability to contribute to team success. Playing time is earned and is determined solely by the coaching staff based on performance, preparedness, and what best serves the team and is not guaranteed for any participant. Winning games/events/competitions is the goal at this level while remaining focus ed on sportsmanship, team culture, and student-athlete well-being.
Junior Varsity - The Junior Varsity team supports athletes who are refining their skills and preparing for varsity-level competition. Practices and games are more competitive in nature, and playing time is based on a combination of ability, attitude, and effort. Athletes may move between JV and varsity during the season as determined by the coaching staff.
10th Grade/B-Squad - Serving as a bridge between developmental and competitive levels, the 10A/10B/B-Squad teams continue to prioritize fundamental skill development while gradually increasing competitive expectations. While game participation is encouraged for all athletes, playing time may begin to vary based on effort, performance, and team needs. Coaches will maintain open communication regarding areas for improvement and overall progress.
9th Grade - Designed as an introduction to high school athletics, the 9A and 9B teams focus on player development, skill building, and understanding of team concepts. Participation and improvement are emphasized, with all athletes receiving practice opportunities and the potential to compete in scheduled games. Coaches will provide consistent feedback and support as players grow in fundamentals and team awareness.
Athletes in Grades 7 and 8 (Middle School Exceptional Athlete)
Per MSHSL bylaws, 7th and 8th grade students are eligible for participation at the high school level, however, the use of 7th and 8th grade athletes to compete on 9th Grade, 10th Grade/B-Squad, Junior Varsity, and/or Varsity teams is discouraged whenever possible. Each case of a middle school athlete moving to a high school team is handled individually under the direction of the Head Coach and Athletic Director. Due to participation numbers or the competitive nature of certain sports, middle school participation may be promoted to offer teams. When program numbers are robust, promotions will only be made in extraordinary circumstances.
