Farmington, Minn. -- In a matchup at Schmitz-Maki Arena on Saturday night, the Farmington Tigers secured a 3-1 victory over the Eagan Wildcats in a girls' hockey game. The win pushed the Tigers' overall record to 14-8, with a conference standing of 10-6 in the SSC. The game also took on added significance as it was designated as Hockey Fights Cancer day in Farmington. Various fundraising events were organized, including Chuck a Puck for Boys and Girls Varsity, Cindi's Sweets HFC Cookie Sales, a "I Fight For" Sign Table, and Raffle Baskets featuring generous donations from the community.
Amid the events, a moment of silence was observed before the national anthem paying respect to the recent tragedy in Shakopee. The proceeds from the Hockey Fights Cancer Event were dedicated to supporting a Farmington Hockey Family battling the disease and the Goliath Project, a non-profit in Prior Lake aiding cancer survivor student-athletes in their return to sports. Last year, $4,000 was raised, and expectations were high for an even more successful outcome this year.
On the ice, the Tigers took control, leading 1-0 after the first period courtesy of a goal by #27 Lexi Giller. The second period remained scoreless, but in the third, Farmington extended their lead with goals from #16 Amelia Goblirsch at 9:28 and #26 Morgan Mitchell at 13:01. Despite Eagan's effort, they managed to get on the scoreboard with #7 Lily Anderson's goal at 15:47. The final outcome favored Farmington 3-1.
Farmington dominated the shots category with 41 compared to Eagan's 14. Power plays were unsuccessful for both teams, with Eagan going 0 for 1 and Farmington 0 for 5. Penalties were limited, with Eagan accumulating 10 minutes on 5 infractions and Farmington with only 2 minutes on 1 infraction. Notably, the BAND added to the Varsity contests' atmosphere, marking a noteworthy and engaging presence at the rink.
