LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Farmington Tigers girls hockey team secured a critical 2-1 win over the Lakeville South Cougars on Tuesday night in a South Suburban Conference and Section 1AA showdown. The victory improves Farmington to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the SSC, handing the Cougars their first conference loss of the season.
RECAP
Farmington struck early in the first period, with senior Kennedy Meier finding the back of the net just 3:09 into the game for the 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Taylor Risch capitalized on a power play opportunity, scoring at the 14:32 mark with an assist from Lexi Giller, giving the Tigers a 2-0 cushion heading into the first intermission.
Both teams battled through a scoreless second period, with Farmington successfully killing off multiple penalties to preserve their lead.
In the third, the Cougars cut the deficit to one when Camden Hopper scored at 4:44. Despite relentless pressure and a 14-shot effort by Lakeville South in the final frame, Farmington's defense and standout goaltending from Makena Underwood, who recorded 25 saves on 26 shots, kept the Cougars from equalizing.
Farmington's penalty kill was a key factor, holding Lakeville South to 0-for-6 on the power play while limiting quality scoring opportunities.
