FARMINGTON, Minn. -- For the second time in four days Farmington used a three-goal third period to turn a close game into a comfortable win.
This one came in a 7-3 victory over Rosemount Friday in its South Suburban Conference opener at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The Tigers led 3-2 after a wide-open first period with Lexi Giller opening the scoring at the 8:11 mark and Taylor Risch adding two more scores later in the opening frame.
"There was a lot of hooking and grabbing going on that wasn't called," Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. "That caused some disruption and frustration.
"After that it was like the officials were trying to make up for the lack of penalties."
The stats bear out Holmes' observations. One penalty was called in the opening period. Nine penalty whistles blew in the second period and seven more infractions were called in the third.
Each team tallied a goal in the penalty-marred second period with Jenna Goblirsch netting her first of the season to put the Tigers ahead 4-3 at the second break.
The final 17 minutes belonged to the home team with Goblirsch adding two scores to record a hat trick. Giller notched the other Farmington goal, her second in as many games.
Goblirsch finished a four-point night with an assist to go with her hat trick. Risch and Giller each recorded three points with a pair of goals and an assist.
Amelia Goblirsch and Addison Trapp each chipped with a pair of assists; Payton Blom, Josey Empey and Ava Garofalo each had one.
Senior goaltender Makena Underwood chalked up her second win of the young season with a 16-save effort. Farmington finished with a 37-19 advantage in the shots-on-goal department.
Holmes said he was pleased with his team's 2-0 start but cautioned it has a lot of growing to do.
"We need to play more consistently on each shift and in every zone on the rink," he said. "Every team we play will be looking to make a statement against us."
