How the Class 6A Playoffs Work
The Class 6A tournament is made up of the top 32 teams in the state, divided into four sections of eight schools. Each section seeds its teams from #1 to #8 using the MSHSL's seeding policy, which is based on performance and strength of schedule. Once the regular season ends, the sections are seeded, and the tournament committee places these teams into one of six random brackets. Each bracket features four subgroups, where teams from different sections are matched up in the early rounds.
Each bracket is structured to keep the top seeds on opposite sides, meaning #1 seeds from different sections cannot meet until the state semifinals. Similarly, the #1 and #2 seeds from the same section are guaranteed to avoid each other until the state championship game. The first two rounds are held on Friday nights at the higher-seeded team's home field, with the winners of round two earning "State Qualifier" trophies. After two rounds, the remaining eight teams will compete in the official State Tournament under the direction of the MSHSL.
