Farmington, Minn. -- In the opening round of the Section 1AAAA tournament, the Farmington Tigers softball team dominated the Rochester John Marshall Rockets with a commanding 15-1 victory on Wednesday. A massive nine-run fourth inning propelled the Tigers to their decisive win.
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with Kam Hughes and Leah Oistad each scoring on Hughes' walk and Oistad's single. Farmington extended their lead in the third inning thanks to a single by Kaydence Moe, a ground out by Marissa Mittelstadt, and a costly error by the Rockets.
Farmington exploded offensively in the fourth inning. Olivia McMahon was hit by a pitch, driving in a run, followed by Moe's RBI single. Ellie Peterson's bases-loaded walk brought in another run, Brynn Lickfelt added an RBI single, and Hughes delivered a three-run triple. Lila Johannsen then tripled, bringing in another run, and Kayley Schuenemann capped the scoring spree with an RBI single.
Mittelstadt pitched a strong game for the Tigers, allowing just two hits and one run over five innings, striking out eight and walking one. On the mound for the Rockets, Natalie Thomson struggled, giving up 10 hits and 15 runs (14 earned) over four innings, with one strikeout and six walks.
Farmington's offense was potent, amassing 10 hits. Moe and Oistad each recorded two hits, while Hughes and Moe led the team with three RBIs apiece. The Tigers also showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks, and were aggressive on the bases with four steals.
For the Rockets, Maya Mack and Brooklyn Brady each managed one hit, with Brady driving in the team's lone run, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate.
With this impressive win, the Farmington Tigers advance to the next round of the tournament, showcasing a strong start to their postseason campaign.
