FARMINGTON, Minn. – The top-seeded Farmington Tigers opened the Section 1AA playoffs in dominant fashion, defeating No. 8 seed South Central 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena. The Tigers advance to the semifinals, where they will host No. 5 seed Mankato East on Saturday, February 8, at 7:00 p.m.
RECAP
Farmington set the tone early, scoring three goals in the first period and never looking back.
Payton Blom got the Tigers on the board just 1:37 into the game, finishing a setup from
Paige Johnson and
Ryann Bengston. Less than a minute later,
Amelia Goblirsch extended the lead with a goal off an assist from her sister,
Jenna Goblirsch, and
Josey Empey.
Jenna Goblirsch added a goal of her own at 7:41, giving the Tigers a commanding 3-0 lead after the first period.
Farmington continued to apply pressure in the second period, outshooting South Central 24-3.
Taylor Risch capitalized on the Tigers' lone power-play opportunity of the night, netting a goal off assists from Blom and
Jenna Goblirsch to make it 4-0.
The Tigers sealed the win in the third period with two more goals. Bengston struck at 4:39 off assists from
Kennedy Meier and Blom, followed by
Julia Gerwing adding the final tally at 7:39, with
Katey Getting earning the assist.
Farmington goaltender
Makena Underwood needed to make just four saves to secure the shutout, as the Tigers' defense limited South Central's scoring chances. Meanwhile, Farmington fired 76 shots on goal, keeping South Central netminder Ilamay Draheim busy all night.
